How to Make the Perfect S’more

When camping season is in full swing, you need to be sure you have everything that you need before you set out. On the list of supplies, you will have your tent, sleeping bag, and many other essentials, but there is another thing that you should not forget. Your s’more supplies!

Made popular in the 1920s by Girl Scouts, making s’mores by the campfire is a delicious camping tradition, giving you a toasted treat while taking in nature’s bounty. But is there a way to make a perfect s’more? Let’s take a look.

Basics

First, let’s just do a quick review of what a classic s’more is. It is a toasted marshmallow placed on a bar of chocolate and made into a sandwich with graham crackers. The name means you will always want “some more,” because their sticky sweetness is irresistible. Plain milk chocolate is usually the chocolate of choice, but you can really attempt anything that is chocolatey and that would be easy to melt.

The Fire

There is a trick when it comes to building the optimal fire for making s’mores. The urge is to try to roast the marshmallows right when the fire gets going and the flames start reaching up, but that is a mistake when it comes to s’mores. In fact, the only thing those flames will do for you is turn your marshmallow into ashes. If that is the way that you like your marshmallow, then go ahead and roast it on a young, hot fire.

If you are wanting a more golden, melted, toasted marshmallow, you will need more patience. Toasting the marshmallow over smoldering embers will give you a more slowly toasted and perfect marshmallow to put in your s’more. You will need to put the hot marshmallow immediately on the chocolate to melt the chocolate down a bit before putting it in the graham crackers.

Foil it up

One popular twist on the classic s’more is to do foiled s’mores. With this method, you won’t wind up with a toasted marshmallow, but you will get an overall melted delicious result. What you do is construct the uncooked the s’more layers, with graham crackers, chocolate and marshmallow and wrap it in aluminum foil. Then you can set the foil on top of the coals or set them on a grill if there is one over your campfire. It won’t take long to get it heated up so don’t leave them on forever.

If your campfire has a grill on it, you can risk just putting the s’more directly on it, but there is a chance that the graham cracker will burn on the bottom, especially if it is left on too long.

S’mores Anytime

The best thing about s’mores is that you can have them anytime. You don’t have to limit your enjoyment of the s’mores to when you are camping. If you are having a hankering for a s’more at home, you can make them in the oven. Put the oven on broil. Lay out the s’mores on a cookie sheet and put them in the oven, but leave the door cracked. It will only 5 to 10 minutes to cook, so watch closely to make sure they do not burn. You can also use mini marshmallows and chocolate chips since it is a totally flat surface and you don’t have to worry about them falling apart in a fire.

Any way that you make them, s’mores are just a wonderful treat that you can share with your family. Regardless of using a stick, a metal roasting stick, or even your oven, we can all enjoy the summer fun.
