Montañita – surfing paradise on the Pacific coast

A small town on the south coast of Ecuador known for the best parties on the continent and what’s more, one of the top five surfing spots in Latin America, the amazing Montañita.

Loaded with tourists, wave chasers, backpackers and people from all around the globe who come to taste the exciting environment of Montañita.

 

La Punta

Known for its surfing point ( La Punta ), Montañita is a welcoming home for everybody who wants to experience a different lifestyle and for the ones who dedicate their time to professional surfing.

 

Montañita is a dynamic surf destination with a prime surf season from December to April. During this period the small town becomes a world class destination for wave hunters who are escaping from the winter of the Northern hemisphere.

 

The other side of La Punta

This season is characteristic by NW swells produced by winter storms in the North Pacific ocean and also NW-SW mixed swells. Winds tend to be offshore which are great for surfing because they form perfect waves. From May to November onshore winds are dominant but the mornings are still good for surfing.

The best surfing spot for professional surfers is La Punta (the Point) where the height of the waves reaches up to 14 feet. This rocky cliff is a perfect place for people who enjoy riding big waves.

For beginners, a more suitable spot is the central part of the beach where waves are still big but the bottom is sandy which makes it safer.

 

Montañita

In October 2016 the Government of Ecuador, supported by the Ministry of Tourism officially declared Montañita as a ‘surf town.’ For its beach breaks and point breaks, its surfing board manufacturers, the surfing schools, the championships, world-class surfers and surfing media.

 

The little town of Montañita is not only known for surfing but also for the mixture of thousands of cultures, cuisine and beach view hostels.

The streets are full of handcraft artists from all over the continent, different type of food vendors, and the famous cocktail stands down the cocktail alley.

There are also many restaurants, discotheques, surf shops and Spanish schools.

Montañita is not only Ecuador’s top surfing spot but also Latin America’s. This beach has best rides on the continent which make it a surfer’s paradise.

For the non-surfing tourists, there is part of Montañita called Tigrillo which offers a peaceful vacation. It’s on the other side of the road where the jungle starts. Up from the hills, there is an amazing view of the whole town and the ocean.

In the May-September period, there are families of dolphins jumping in the waves and playing with the surfers.

 

Whenever you are traveling to South Amerca, use the opportunity to visit Montañita and enjoy a fun and enjoyable vacation.  Perfect waves and climate are waiting for you!
