Essential Items to Start Ice Climbing

Winter sports are a great way to stay in shape when it’s cold and miserable outside, when you get involved you don’t worry so much about the weather, you warm up and get on, and that’s what it’s all about.

There are many different activities that you can do throughout the winter season, but particularly fun one for some people is ice climbing.

At the moment we’ve not got any ice near the Outdoor Revival office but we’re hoping!

You will need to be sure to have the right equipment to stay as safe as possible. If you do not have the right equipment with you when you go ice climbing, not only will it be very dangerous, but you also will not get very far.

When you’re starting out it’s also good to have some instruction or someone with you that knows how to ice climb, there are techniques that are different from normal climbing and they’re good to learn and will help you a lot and keep you safe.

Here are some of the pieces of equipment that you need to have with you when you go ice climbing.

You should definitely bring a belay device with you. Belay devices are useful because they take up the slack line and, in the case of a fall, they will immediately apply the brakes to prevent a nasty fall. There is a special type of belay device that must be used, specifically for ice climbing, called a ‘two slot tubular-type delay’.

Another thing that you should bring with you is Carabiners, and it is important to get a few different kinds so that you can ice climb properly. You should bring a few locking carabiners with you to use them in conjunction with your belay device. You should also get a sling that can be clipped to your harness.

Another thing you need when you go ice climbing is a quickdraw, a device that allows a rope to run freely through various bolt anchors while leading. This is used for increased security when handling all the climbing ropes.

You should also be sure to bring two different kinds of ropes with you when you go ice climbing. One of the types of rope that you are going to need is called ‘dynamic rope’, which is a bit more elastic. The other type of rope is a ‘static rope’, which has a very little stretch to it.

Another thing that you should definitely take with you is a sturdy climbing helmet. This is something that is very important to use for almost any climbing sport to be sure to stay safe in the case of any accident.

This is important because there are a lot of things that could happen while you are ice climbing. You can be hit with ice chunks that are falling from the mountain, or there could be heavy snow that hits you while you are climbing. Both of these things can cause major injury and that’s just not going to be fun.

Take tried and tested climbing boots. There are boots that are made especially for ice climbing, made with plastic with a flat sole that crampons can be attached to. This type of boot is used because it is rigid and well insulated. Having a rigid boot is important because it greatly aids in various ice climbing techniques, such as front pointing.

You also need to get a specific kind of harness before setting out. A harness made particularly for ice climbing, rather than rock climbing. The thing that makes ice climbing harnesses unique is that they are typically less bulky and more comfortable to sit back on. This is important because you would have more layering and comfortable padding wearing your winter gear.

As previously mentioned, crampons are something that you are going to need to bring with you when participating in this winter sport. These crampons are metal spikes that attach to the climbing boots that you have brought with you. Crampons that have about ten or twelve points are usually the most popular with ice climbing enthusiasts. It is very important to have these with you if they want to successfully climb in the winter, they’re your grip in the ice.

Ice axes are also another essential item that you need to bring with you when ice climbing. These are special tools that hook into the ice to get you up the mountain. Ice climbing axes can also come with picks and hammers or adzes so that you can have more than one tool to help you get up to the top of the mountain.

You should also bring a climbing backpack to be sure that you have a place to store all your material. You are not only going to need the required clothing, but you should also be sure that you have enough space to keep all of the tools. You are going to want to be sure to get a comfortable backpack that will be able to hold a lot of weight in it.

Ice climbing is a very fun winter sport. When going ice climbing, you must be sure to bring all of the proper materials to stay safe, participate properly, and have a great time while doing so.
