There is a story doing the rounds that Volkswagen will be producing an all-new version of the iconic hippy bus. For those of us who are old enough to remember, this was the best fun vehicle ever built.
The re-launched vehicle will, however, be electric which really resonates with its hippy ideal. Those people who grew to love this old VW camper always wondered why production of it ever stopped.
The original bus was released in 1950 and in the 1970s production was outsourced. Factories in Brazil continued with the manufacture as safety regulations in Germany were changing. Eventually, the assembly line was completely stopped because 2014 Brazilian safety standards were not met. These standards included the requirements that airbags were fitted
With the new standards that have now been set, Volkswagen is considering jump starting a new sales campaign in the United States beginning with a revived version of the classic bus. Some of the iconic features will be retained, those being the solid D-pillar, the box style design of the middle section and a short overhang on the front.
We would like to see the bus looking much like the original one did. Is this all true? Well it is still on the drawing board and whether or not it goes into production depends on whether it is going to be cost effective, Plaid Zebra reported.
The VW company has been known for hanging this carrot out for the die-hard hippy groupies. Previous re-releases like the 2001 retro microbus and the 2011 Bulli have not managed to live up to the reputation of the original much-loved vehicles.
