We all love spending time in the sun. Some of us even fall asleep on the beach, which is not the best thing you can do for your skin. Our skin gets easily damaged when it comes to extended exposure, and many times we end up crying in bed at night instead of having fun with our friends and family. However, many of us suffer sunburn at least once a year and often we have no idea what to do and how to treat it. Let’s say you find yourself in a place where there is no pharmacy nearby, what will you do?
Here are some useful natural remedies that will help you treat sunburn in such cases.
Oatmeal is not only good for your breakfast but helps in soothing your skin as well. Use an old nylon stocking, fill it with oats, and put it in your bathtub while you’re soaking your body. Make sure the water is not hot. What you need to do when sunburned is to lower your body temperature, so cold water with oats will help you calm your skin down. Soak for 15 minutes and then air-dry yourself so you don’t wipe off the healing oats.
Baking soda is known for its many healing properties which includes soothing of the skin, reducing skin inflammation and itching, and helping with sunburn. Add a handful of baking soda into your cold bath water and soak for 15-20 minutes. Also, you can combine oats with baking soda for an even greater skin-healing effect.
Try the most common white vinegar you have at home as it contains acetic acid, a component of aspirin that relieves pain, stops the itching and the uncomfortable feeling of sunburn. Take a few paper towels and soak them in the vinegar. Then, apply them to the painful spots of your body and leave them until they’re dry. Be careful with the area around your eyes because vinegar can sting. If you can’t stand the smell of it and don’t want to apply it directly to your skin, then add a cup of white vinegar into your bath. Soak for 20 minutes and then rinse with cold water.
The probiotics in plain, unsweetened, and unflavored yogurt are very effective in healing sunburn naturally. Apply yogurt with your hands on the burned areas and wait until your skin absorbs it. Then, without washing it, repeat the procedure on all the parts that look dry again. After 30 minutes your skin should get the needed hydration and will stop absorbing the yogurt. That’s when you wash your body with cold water and apply a body moisturizer.
After a long day in the sun, there is nothing better than soothing your skin with the anti-oxidant, green tea. Soak cotton balls into cold green tea and apply it on your skin. Mixing green tea with mint is even better because the cooling effect is increased. You will be surprised by the power of these two natural remedies that all of us have at home.
The king among the plants that we all love, Aloe Vera! The healing properties of this plant are incredibly powerful. If you ever get sunburned in a place where Aloe grows, you’re saved. Just cut one leaf, or a part of it, wash it until the yellow juice comes off, cut it with a knife in the middle, scoop the transparent gel and apply it on the painful spots of your body. After 20 minutes you will feel like you have new, regenerated skin.
