This is a great one for our readers; we know that may of you ride both offroad and in the city’s where some of you live and we also know that there’s a serious issue with bike theft which these guys at Skunklock are trying to address.
We’ve taken this info from the indiegogo crowdsourcing site so that the information is accurate and you can go and read more about this great product here at Indiegogo
I’m Daniel Idzkowski and I’m an inventor and entrepreneur from San Francisco. Like you, I also like to ride bikes. After my friends and I had our bikes stolen over and over we decided to revisit how a lock could deter a thief and start a revolution in the process.
SKUNKLOCK is our attempt at finally putting a dent in bicycle and motorcycle theft. It packs a POWER PUNCH – a unique chemical deterrent released when the lock is compromised.
We intend SKUNKLOCK to be a wakeup call to thieves with tools who know that any existing bike lock can be cut within a minute, and that’s why 1.5 million bikes are stolen each year.
Many of today’s U-Locks are vulnerable to even simple hacksaws or crowbars. Some electronic locks that have fancy technology like GPS tracking and are app-enabled can even be zapped into submission with an inexpensive taser.
Serious thieves use serious tools like battery operated angle grinders and blow torches – that’s what it takes to cut through a quality lock. SKUNKLOCK is a hardened medium-carbon steel U-Lock that’s as difficult to compromise as the strongest U-Locks, AND comes with a surprise: it’s pressurized inside with a noxious chemical deterrent that slams the would-be thief with noxious chemicals. The chemicals are so disgusting they induce vomit in the majority of cases, and elicit an instinctive response to run away immediately.
The distinctive colors scheme warns a would-be thief of impending trouble
A design that does NOT incorporate electronics! Batteries fail, GPS devices can be disabled and RFID can be destroyed with simple tools. No electronics means no chance for failure!
Pressurized deterrent adversely affects the thief but any attempt to steal your bike will likely attract attention – another benefit of a lock that fights back!
Designed to never expose the noxious chemicals inside. The noxious, vomit-inducing chemicals are confined and permanently sealed within a secure hollow chamber throughout the lock. The only way you may expose the chemicals is by trying to cut through it with an angle grinder (even then it wouldn’t be easy).
Stronger than the highest quality U-Locks on the market. The lock is made from hardened medium-carbon steel that exceeds 450 brinell. The difference is that if a thief cuts far enough through to puncture the seal, the lock will release noxious chemicals stopping the thief in their tracks.
We have taken the necessary precautions to ensure that the SkunkLock is legal and compliant with US laws and regulations. On March 2016, we conducted a survey of state laws within the United States regarding the sale and ownership of SkunkLock products. We have identified that there are some possible limitations of shipping the SkunkLock to certain states within the US due to the fact that some versions of the SkunkLock may contain capsaicin compounds.
We know that these regulations were enacted with pepper spray in mind. Although the SkunkLock is not strictly a pepper spray product, in order to ensure compliance, we may initially reserve our right to refuse directly selling and shipping our SkunkLock product to certain states or countries.
However, we also reserve the right to ship SkunkLock products that contain our alternative formula that does not utilize capsaicin as a primary irritant; thus, ensuring our compliance in those states. Please visit our website for further information and our latest stance on legal compliance and check with your local and State laws as these may differ from state to state and country by country.
