Sweating is the Best Kept Secret of Human Body – some health benefits of Sweating

Human preferences in relation to dress code and etiquette have evolved tremendously and have now taken a form that was absolutely unfathomable even a few centuries ago.

Before the social revolution in the 20th century and to some extent a century before that, there existed a very visible barrier between the working class and ruling class or the elite of the society. Anything that even had a passing acquaintance with labor was viewed with disgust by the elite. One such thing that slipped through the cracks of social revolution into our modern life has to be the distaste associated with sweating, hence the phrase Sweating like a pig.

You can hardly find a culture wherein the smell of sweat is not associated with unhygienic lifestyle and unpleasantness. However, sweating is not only very natural and part of human existence, but it also has many health benefits; some of those benefits are listed below.

Try touching your body when you are sweating; you feel a cool sensation. This cool sensation is primarily what sweating is all about, when you happen to be in a warmer climate. It’s humans’ personal cooling system if you like. However, there is a catch, the climate around you could be warm or even hot, but the air has to be dry in order for you to fully benefit from sweating in terms of keeping you cool, if you are surrounded by moisture rich (humid) air sweating will not be as effective.

Sweating is also our body’s method to flush out harmful toxins lurking in our tissues, practically detoxing our bodies for better functionality. Researchers at the University of Alberta found that sweating apparently helps excrete the unwanted toxic elements.

A number of studies on the notorious chemical contaminant Bisphenol A, simply known as BPA have revealed that sweating is the only method that releases this tricky compound out of our system. BPA is famously known as the agent related to a number of adverse health conditions.

Researchers tested a number of participants for the chemical composition of the sweat and found that almost 80 percent of the participants had BPA in their sweat whereas no traces of BPA were detected in urine and blood samples of the same participants.

The sweating takes place after the chemicals are released from our body through millions of eccrine sweat glands spread all over our skin.

An esteemed dermatologist from New York City Dr. Adebola Dele-Michael says that our pores spread open when we sweat and that opening of pores releases the various contaminants that lurk under our skin. Sweating essentially cleanses our skins and rids it of all the toxins that can potentially plague our skins with pimples and other blemishes.

Sweating also helps accelerate the healing process of the wounds such as burns and scrapes. University of Michigan’s research found that sweat glands are house to scores of tiny stem cells that once over the skin help the wounds to heal at a higher rate.

The researchers found out that human bodies heal wounds much more effectively than other mammals and presence of these glands and the sweating mechanism is perhaps the best-kept secret of our bodies.
