Camping requires a lot of “sacrifices” such as giving up a lot of comforts and the easy rituals of home life. But there are some rituals that are simply un-give-up-able.
Passionate coffee drinkers or coffee addicts know that wherever they are, their day begins with a warm cup of coffee. Indoors or outdoors, It doesn’t matter.
One of the guys in the office here at Outdoor Revival HQ goes through about 4 cups of coffee before he’s properly functional and it’s just the same when we’re out camping or traveling.
The good news is that it’s possible to have a coffee in the mornings while camping. Of course, some of your pleasure depends on how high your standards are for your coffee, but you can make it in various ways when you are camping and here’s how.
If you can drink just boiled water with the taste of coffee, then the old, “cowboy” way of preparing it should suit you, and it won’t take you much time or trouble. It is very simple. You just put water in a pot and put the coffee grounds in it, and just mix it with a spoon. Leave it on the fire and let it boil a bit. Remove it, let it cool as much as you like, and there you go – you have a fresh, brewed coffee under the open sky. Like a real cowboy.
If you are more delicate about your coffee, then the solution is simple again – buy yourself a Moka coffee pot and take it with you wherever you go. You can use the same one you have at home, or you can treat yourself with a special Moka coffee pot for camping.
Another solution would be the Coleman camping coffee maker. Even though it is quite unpractical to have it with you if you are hiking, it is great if you are traveling in a car. The coffee maker works as a typical drip coffee maker once you place it on a Coleman stove to heat. Both the coffee maker and the stove are heavy, so don’t consider this option if you aren’t camping with your vehicle.
Oh, there is also the French Press. It is small, light, cheap, and the coffee from it is decent. It is practical and easy to pack. It is just perfect for camping. You need to heat up the water in a pot and then pour it into the french press. Then you add the coffee and press down so that all the coffee grounds would be pushed to the bottom.
There is also the coffee filter. Nothing is lighter than this. You can always have it on you, just in case. Not to mention when you’re camping. You need to attach the filter to your cup, put the coffee in and pour the hot water in. Leave it like that and after a few minutes just remove the filter. It is simple and practical, and it can also be used for making tea.
And, well, if you are fond of espresso there is a solution for that too. If you need that short, strong taste of coffee to wake you up in the morning, you should get the Aeropress coffee maker. It works much like the French press, except that the air pushes the espresso out, into your cup, instead of pushing the coffee grounds to the bottom. The AeroPress is lightweight and slim which means that they can be packed easily.
These are just a few of the options for making coffee in the outdoors. Of course, every coffee lover has their way of making their coffee wherever they are, but you should always try a new way. A new machine, a new coffee, and a new place to have it.
