Getting started in the sport of Kayaking

These days, you can find people enjoying kayaking wherever there is a body of water big enough. Over the past twenty years, a huge surge of enthusiasm for kayaking has been observed, and the sports industry that revolves around it has grown by leaps and bounds, and the trend seems to be ongoing.

With this surge came a whole load manufacturers making it accessible and affordable to buy all the essential gear for people to get out and enjoy kayaking. Thanks to the internet, social media and the like, there has been an increased desire among the general population to get fit and stay fit, this has contributed heavily to promoting greater participation in what was previously a relatively unknown sport and recreational activity.

However, this surge of interest inevitably brings with it the potential for poor information regarding the equipment used in kayaking and its applications.

Consider the following pointers if you wish to get into kayaking and need a decent head start in this exciting sport.

Getting into Kayaking

Regardless of the nature of a sport or any other recreational activity, it is always a good idea to carry out some initial research, so you understand the ins and outs of the activity. With kayaking, you need knowledge and understanding before you jump into it, it’s a water based sports and carries the potential of serious accidents if not approached responsibly and with care.

Knowing what type of equipment you will require for your particular type of kayaking is key to not ending up buying expensive stuff that you might never need to use.

Kayaking has many different applications; Whitewater kayaking, touring, sea kayaking, sit-on-top kayaking, recreational kayaking, kayak camping and kayak fishing are some of the many kayaking forms that you can choose from.

There is a lot of overlap in the different types of kayaking, but there are also certain skills and gear that are specific and unique to it each activity type, so knowing your preferred kayaking type is useful before you actually plunge into the sport.

Kayaking Gear

After you have successfully determined the type of kayaking you want to undertake, the next step is to choose the right kind of equipment for it. This doesn’t mean simply popping into the first kayaking shop you see and buying any kayak that suits your taste. It is important that you get good advice and do your own research so you know what you’d like to do and the best gear to invest in.

Even if you cannot afford to buy brand new equipment and decide to opt for buying from second-hand shops, you need to make sure the used equipment is not damaged.  Kayaking gear is tough, but it’s not indestructible so make sure you inspect it thoroughly.

Kayaking Skills

Sure, kayaking can look pretty simple when you see someone kayaking on television or in out on the lake. It seems as if it only requires sitting and chilling in a fancy little boat and paddling a bit, and how hard can that be, right? Well, that would be wrong. Though it might seem like that at times, there’s more to kayaking than first meets the eye.

For starters, there is a wide variety of different paddling styles and strokes. Some people only know and adhere to a simple forward paddle, but there are many variations that need to be learned and mastered. And if waters aren’t very friendly, or if you are out there for the fishing, you’ll need a different set of skills to control and steer your boat to keep on top of the fish.

Kayaking is Fun

Fun is definitely associated with kayaking. Most kayakers like to get out on the water simply to have a fun time with friends and family.

Technicalities aside, the main aim of kayaking must be to enjoy yourself and develop and perfect the skills while enjoying yourself. Water sports are traditionally considered to be more enjoyable than many land-based sports, simply because it brings out the primal instincts associated with being in nature and the elements, and if the activity is shared with your best mates, it just keeps getting better.
