This thing’s just so darned cool, everyone here at Outdoor Revival HQ wants one of these.
Of course, we would only want it for work so that we can make films for articles, so our interest is purely professional, we’d not just take it everywhere and play with it like an awesome new toy that allows us to see 300 feet under the waves, honestly!
Bottom line, who would not want an underwater drone? Heck, the market for flying drones is massive and growing fast, so it’s about time we had more focus on under the waves, and this is where the Gladius comes into its own.
Sure, there are other remote underwater vehicles, but they’re more expensive and probably more complicated then just using your smart phone to control it. If you need something more than a underwater drone check out our article on personal submarines, if you’ve got the money they could be well worth the upgrade.
Anyway, I digress, we’re looking at the Gladius Submersible Underwater Drone which is currently an active Indiegogo crowdfunding project that’s already over it’s goal by more than 500%. If you want an underwater drone that can go over 300 feet deep and record images and video in 4k then this could be what you’ve been looking for.
Here’s some more information from their product funding page.
Gladius Underwater Drone is capable of diving up to 100 meters (328ft) deep with a horizontal range of 500 meters (1,640ft), while staying submerged for 3 hours, allowing you to capture Ultra HD 1080P/4K quality photo and video directly to internal storage or live stream your dive in real-time. Whether you’re a scuba diver, underwater photographer, commercial diver, oceanographer or just want to have fun, we’ve intelligently engineered Gladius with features to fit a wide range of uses.
With easy to operate piloting controls, low-light sensors and image quality algorithms, Gladius empowers anyone to explore while capturing crystal clear, distortion free imagery at depths of 100 meters.
Whether you’re a scuba diver, underwater photographer, commercial diver, oceanographer or just want to have fun, we’ve intelligently engineered Gladius with features to fit a wide range of uses:
Most Affordable – Compared to other underwater drones with similar features, Gladius is a steal at $599.
Easy To Control – Piloting is easy with its quad thrusters, four degrees of freedom and gaming-like controller.
Long Range – Semi-tether connection increases range to 500m and 100m deep, triple the industry average.
Image Optimization – Light sensors and image optimization algorithms create stunning 4K videos without distortion.
Portable Case – Weighing only 6.6lbs and measuring 16.9″x10.2″x3.7″, transport anywhere via backpack or Gladius’ included hard-shell case.
Simply insert your iOS or Android smartphone into the remote control.
With similarities to a gaming system, you move Gladius through the operation of two joysticks.
One operates the forward, back, and turning of the drone (think of it like walking), while the other operates the direction in which the camera faces (think of it like moving your head).
Your smartphone rests in the center of the remote controller, so you can view the live stream of your underwater exploration.
Capture high quality photo and video directly to internal storage or live stream your dive in real-time.
The Gladius underwater smart drone allows you to explore the depths with crystal clear HD imagery, conduct search and rescue operations from afar, and inspect boats, pools, and equipment without a diver handy.
Gladius features an on-board 1080P (Standard) or 4K (Advanced) camera in order to take stunning underwater photo and video.
See the underwater world like never before… (Footage is compress but be sure that Gladius shoots in Ultra HD)
The unique stabilizing mechanisms are combined with low light sensors and image quality optimization algorithm to allow users to take 16 megapixel photos and 4K video without distortion.
LED lights on either side of the camera have 135 degree illumination angle to light a clear path for the drone and illuminate your underwater subjects.
Each light is 1200 lumens and features dimming controls for varying visibility conditions.
You can see more information here on the Gladius Underwater Photography & Exploration Drone Where you can purchase your very own for your underwater adventures.
