The best camping meal – chicken and dumplings one-pot camping recipe

A camping trip to the wilderness is not merely a break from the mind-numbing hustle and bustle of the urban lifestyle. For many, it’s far more than an escape: it’s the time to contemplate and feel true to oneself through purification of thoughts and lungs. However, humans do get hungry very quickly. We can do away from our city life but staying away from food is a whole different ball game. Camping doesn’t have to be boring, though it might seem at times, and you can add a little taste to your day out by preparing some really quick and tasty dishes.

A number of avid campers have been praising one dish in particular. It is simple, very easy and finger-licking-delicious. The name of the dish is one-pot chicken and dumplings. To start with the dish, you require any ordinary iron pot with a lid, and you are all set to go. The best thing about this special recipe is that it is perfect for camping since it doesn’t require much movement or elaborate preparation: one pot and some fire will do the job perfectly. After it is prepared, you can just eat it straight from the pot itself, even if you are cooking for multiple people.

Besides, as the famous saying goes ‘sharing is caring’. You can share it with your mates and family members in the pot, which is in and of itself is a unique experience.

The fact is that everything tastes scrumptious when you are outdoors, by everything I mean everything edible of course. You can savor your treat with wine and beer, and add seasonings of your liking. Enjoy the best camping meal you are ever going to have!

Ingredients:

  • At least two chicken breasts, preferably boneless and skinless
  • 2 cans of 15-ounce chicken broth
  • 1 diced potato
  • 1 small onion – diced
  • 1 carrot – diced
  • A cup of peas
  • 1 sliced stalk celery
  • Garlic salt – ½ teaspoon
  • Thyme – 1 teaspoon
  • Salt – 1 teaspoon
  • Black pepper – 1 teaspoon
  • Bay leaves – at least 2
  • Flour – 3 tablespoons
  • A can of refrigerator biscuits
  • Vegetable oil – 2 tablespoons
  • Butter – 2 tablespoons

Preparation:

Add some oil to the pot and heat on the fire. Now put the chicken breasts and saute for at least 20 minutes, turning every five minutes or so. After 20 minutes take out the chicken and place it on a cutting board.

Take the butter and add to the pot, along with onions. Saute them for another five minutes until onions turn light brown. Now add the flour to the pot and stir to make a rue. Add a can of broth and keep stirring until a smooth gravy starts forming.

Now put the chicken breasts back into the pot, with vegetables, spices and the 2nd can of broth. Keep stirring periodically and bring it to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Take your biscuits, cut them into four pieces and place them on top of the stew.

Now put the lid on the pot and leave it to simmer for another 10 minutes at least. Remove the lid and add bay leaves before serving. This will be enough for four to six people. Enjoy the most delicious camping meal ever.
