Sometimes even native born New Yorkers complain about the poor choice of beaches around their city. What you need to know is where to go and how to find the beauty near you. And there’s no need to despair because there are some real cool places in the area where you can chill out this summer. No matter if you’re visiting New York or you live there, you can enjoy the hot summer days without spending a whole stack of money.
Check out this list and prepare yourself for an exciting weekend.
As soon as you step on the 5-mile beach stretch, you’ll never believe you’re anywhere near the concrete jungle of New York City. You can enjoy the waterfront in some of the picnic areas and prepare a lunch for you and your friends. Peaceful relaxation is guaranteed by the law here. Radios are forbidden in some parts so you can spend a quiet day at the beach. Depending on the weather conditions, you can also ride some waves.
Coney Island is a legendary beach in the New York City area. The beach itself comes second behind all the great activities and food vendors along the shore. Go for a swim and a tanning session, take a quick shower and then spend the rest of the day in the Luna Park. It is especially suitable for families with kids.
Orchard Beach is an artificial mile-long beach on Long Island Sound. You can have a picnic lunch and enjoy the views of City Island. When you get bored of lying around on the sand, you can play volleyball or walk along the hexagonal boardwalk.
In the late 1970’s this beach became famous thanks to the Ramones’ “Rock Rock Rockaway Beach”. It’s 6 miles long and in the last few years has gained in popularity again. Officially, it’s the city’s only legal surfing beach.
Of course, this fact makes it a favorite among the surfing crowd. If feeling hungry after a surfing lesson, a fish taco is what will save the day. Rockaway Beach is an impressive place to be and a must-visit, no matter if you live in New York or just passing through.
Everyone deserves a beach vacation from time to time. If you had no plans to get away or don’t want to spend loads of cash, then visit these cool beach spots near your home. You won’t regret it!
