The 6 best mountain towns in the country

All over the US, there are mountain towns with year round appeal. Some of these picturesque places are popular among domestic tourists, while others also get many international visitors who come to relax, enjoy the natural surroundings or ski during the winter. Outdoor activities, festivals, extreme sports, outstanding food, and a lot of fun is what you can find in all of these small mountain towns.

Aspen, Colorado

Aspen is one of the most famous ski centers in the States, yet it’s not all about winter sports. Throughout the whole year, there are food, wine, art, and music festivals where a lot of people come to spend a weekend or even a week or two on vacation. Among the festivals Aspen hosts, there is the Aspen Ideas Festival which reflects its citizens cultural sophistication. Aspen is also famous for its brewing culture so you can add that to your list of things to explore on your Aspen trip.

Stowe, Vermont

Long before it became a skiing destination, Stowe was a popular summer getaway for city dwellers. Even nowadays the peak season for this tiny Vermont town is in summer, though people still go skiing on Mount Mansfield. The town of Stowe is famous for its old-fashioned and traditional 4th of July parade that’s held every year. Stowe is home to a lot of physically active people that like to get out and enjoy the many hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing opportunities.

Estes Park, Colorado

Everybody who visits the Rocky Mountains National Park and decides to spend a night there must see the town of Estes Park. It’s a tiny mountain town in Larimer County, Colorado, and it’s a famous getaway spot, especially in the summer months. Its charming town square attracts people from all over the area. If you ever go hiking in the Rockies, you must stop for at least one night in Estes Park.

Lewisburg, West Virginia

A great mountain town for adventure vacations is definitely Lewisburg in West Virginia. Just a short distance from Lewisburg downtown you can go hiking, skiing, whitewater rafting, caving, and rock climbing. In short, Lewisburg is a paradise for everyone who likes to have an active outdoor vacation. All history lovers should come here, too, and visit the 18th and 19th-century buildings that are really well preserved. But if you just want to have a picnic, or you want to rent a vacation home, then Lewisburg is going to be near the top of the list for that too.

Telluride, Colorado

This mountain village is located in San Miguel County, Colorado. For most folk, Telluride is only known for its skiing activities during the winter months, but actually, there are a lot of things you can do in summertime, too. Mountain biking, hiking, or river rafting are just some of the outdoor sports you can do in Telluride. If you do decide to visit the town in winter, plan to be there for Christmas to enjoy the best lights you have ever seen.The protected National Historic Landmark District is full of light drapes that give this charming town a magical look.

Boulder, Colorado

Only 25 miles from Denver, Boulder sits at the base of the Rocky Mountains. Rock climbing in the Eldorado Springs or Boulder Canyon is a favorite outdoor activity for many of the locals. What makes this place even more famous is the Naked Pumpkin Run, a traditional Halloween parade where people run the streets wearing only shoes. The naked runners put pumpkins on their heads. However, this act is often reported to the authorities and many of the Halloween runners get arrested.
