Fraser Island – a must-see beach paradise in Australia

Fraser Island is located on the southeastern coast of the state of Queensland, Australia and is 161 miles from Brisbane, Fraser Island is the world’s biggest sand island and has the largest sandy beaches. This amazing world heritage island has more to offer than just golden sand and sun. Ecologists love coming here and exploring the 640 miles of unspoiled natural treasures.

Fraser Island is also home to an area of rainforest that hosts 1000-year-old trees, fresh water lakes. Humpback whales scamper just off shore. If you are an animal lover, you will love this island paradise with its abundance of wildlife. There are more than 250 bird species and  25 species of mammals, including wallabies, possums, flying foxes and Eastern Australia’s dingo.

For those who are not so keen on exploring the various ecosystems, there is a 75-mile stretch of beach on the island’s east coast. The best time to visit Fraser Island is anytime of the year really, depending on whether you want it hot or a bit milder. From December to March the temperature is around 80 degrees Fahrenheit and from June through August it hovers around 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

Fraser Island has more than 100 fresh water lakes which means it has the second highest lake concentration in Australia, with Tasmania having the highest. These lakes are considered to be among the cleanest in the world. Lake McKenzie is the most popular one for visitors from Australia and from abroad. The beach sand of the lake is almost pure silica.

The island has many plant species and it’s the only place on the planet where high vegetation grows in sand. The most characteristic among the mammals is the Eastern Australian dingo which is the only pure dingo breed left nationwide.

As for the birds, Fraser Island offers a diverse world of birds including sea eagles, peregrine falcon, osprey, and kites. Other common birds include pelicans, terns, honeyeaters, gulls, kingfishers, kookaburra, owls, doves, hornbills, ducks, brolgas, and cockatoos.
